I anticipate that the study abroad will be a really intensive experience at first, as I acclimate to the language and culture, but then will morph into something fun and fulfilling. I think that part of what will make it fulfilling will be learning to apply my classroom Spanish. The thing I struggle with now is understanding spoken Spanish vs. written. In writing it is easy to see word breaks, whereas when spoken, words slur together and are sometimes missed entirely. I imagine that it will be hard when I first arrive in Spain but I’m hoping to get some measure of fluency in basic topics by the time I leave.
I think the host family is going to be the best part of the trip. Living with a host family will let me use my Spanish all the time, it will expose me to some good cooking and let me make new friends in a different portion of the world. I think that the whole reason I’m even learning another language is to be able to make new friends and talk to people whom I would otherwise have no way to relate to, so living with a host family is kind of the ultimate, “get to know the culture,” experience.
